Hanako is an elephant aged 69 years old. For 67 years, he lived on his cage at Inokashira Park Zoo, Japan.
At the age of 69, Hanako was at the end of her life. More than 300 thousand Japanese people believe that Hanako should be removed from its cage, which is only a basket of basketball courts. They fought for Hanako to be moved to a more decent place to live. For example, in an elephant sanctuary in Thailand that is its natural habitat. There, at least Hanako can also stay with other elephants.
According to Japanese blogger, Ulara Nakagawa, the zoo where Hanako lived is now the most cruel zoo in the modern world. He wrote: “Only alone in a small cement cage. No convenience is provided. Hanako only stands alone there like a statue. Surely nothing can be done, “Ulara said.
The zoo Ikoshira recognizes that they do not have adequate equipment to care for Hanako. They wouldn’t even take the elephants again if Hanako died of trouble treating him. However, the zoo refuses if it is said to be cruel and abandoning Hanako. They said they knew the best for Hanako and the elephants didn’t like the change. So, moving it now is very late and wasted.
Nevertheless, the Japanese did not stop fighting for the oldest elephants to be moved to a more decent place to live. More than 300 thousand people were signed petitions to zoos and the Japanese government. Forcing them to make up the action and letting Hanako live in his habitat in his last moments in order for him to be happy. “Hanako deserves freedom and spend her time with other elephants. We beg you to give him peace and let Hanako be the happiest for him, “said Helen Wakeman, one of those petitions.
